Days 17 & 18. 66mi to České Budějovice. Forests, dirt roads, castle walls, surprise 12% grades.
Days 15 & 16. 62mi after running errands around Prague, to Moninec, a small ski lodge up a steep hill. The bike serves as a placeholder for me in photos, since I’m usually behind the camera, unless Jenn steals it.
Days 13 & 14. 110mi from Decin, through Melnik and into Prague. The bits of chill shady single track were nice but riding the river is getting a bit old. We’re changing plans and heading through the mountains.
Days 11 & 12. 42mi to Decin after a slow Sunday in Dresden buying prints of fruit at the flea market. This is the second time I’ve crossed this border at this point on a bike.
Day 10. 55mi to Dresden, along the river, for an early arrival at our final destination in Germany. We’re running rather ahead of schedule so we’ll grab a hotel, run some errands, and head to Czech in a couple days.
Day 9. 55mi to Belgern. Bike park tucked between buildings on a clear night preceding a gloomy day. The rain regularly threatens, today delivered. Decamped to a leaky A frame to wait out the storm. Even the storks looked unhappy. Rolled past an abandoned pottery factory slowly being reclaimed by nature.
Day 8. 69mi to Wittenburg. Ferries back and forth across the Elbe. Forests, flowers, farms, and heavy industry. Sometimes all at once.
Day 7. 45mi to Staßfurt. The hotel in the last photo was run by a very odd pair of brothers.
Day 6. 40mi from Goslar to Thale. Steep grades through the forests that shade the northern slopes of the Harz mountain range and connect what was formerly East and Wast Germany. The witches live here.
Day 5. 66 miles to Goslar. Skirting the edge of the Harz mountains. Single track, two track, cobbles; loose rocks and mud.
